Did you know cavities can develop despite a healthy diet if proper hygiene and professional cleanings are not part of your child’s routine? Cavities may cause pain as well as affect your child’s diet, sleep and ability to concentrate at school. One of the best preventative measures dentists use against the formation of cavities are sealants. "Many back teeth have natural deep grooves that can’t be reached by the bristle of a tooth brush. The purpose of a sealant is to fill those grooves to act as a barrier from bacteria that causes decay," explained Ryan Yakowicz, one of the six dentists on Scenic Bluffs’ staff.

In response to this proactive oral health recommendation, Scenic Bluffs Community Health Center has teamed up with local schools to implement a sealant day for local 2nd and 7th graders. During the months of March and April Scenic Bluffs held four separate sealant days at the Cashton health center location. The school districts of NOW and Cashton brought 46 students into the health center for oral exams. After the one-on-one consultation with a Scenic Bluffs dentist, a hygienists applies anywhere from zero to eight sealants based on the dentist’s recommendations. There were 121 sealants placed during these sealant days on 37 of the 46 students.

Not all students, or teeth for that matter, require sealants. After a dentist reviews the child’s oral health care such as fluoride exposure, shape of the tooth and decay history a decision is made on whether or not to apply a preventative sealant. If decay has already taken place the dentist will document the need for cavity repair and have the school nurse connect to connect with the parents on the issue by sending a letter.

This is the ninth year Scenic Bluffs has been collaborating with local school districts to place free sealants. All students have access to this resource whether or not they have current dental insurance.
