Since 2016, Scenic Bluffs has participated in Reach Out and Read, an evidence-based program that promotes literacy through the provision of a book and caregiver education at Well Child Checks in medical appointments. Because of the importance of promoting literacy at a young age, we extended our literacy program into our dental department, increasing access to books and literacy guidance to more families. We call our entire program the Scenic Bluffs’ Read to Me program.
From birth until the age of 5, each child receives a new, developmentally-appropriate book to take home with them at their medical or dental appointment. Books are offered in multiple languages, and can even be useful for families who don’t read, as we encourage them to talk about the story that the pictures tell. Many families do not have access to books at home. By implementing this program in our Health Centers, we strive for every child to have a home library of books by the time they are school-aged.
According to Reach Out and Read, “English- and non-English-speaking families who participated in the Reach Out and Read model increased their weekly bedtime reading, and more parents reported reading as their own or their child’s favorite activity.” As they read and spend time together, families form lasting connections and children learn new skills that serve them well throughout their lives.
