Scenic Bluffs Community Health Centers is proud to be 1 of 18 Community Health Centers (CHCs) in Wisconsin, and 1 of more than 1,400 CHCs across the United States. But what exactly is a CHC?
A CHC, also known as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), is a community-based and patient-directed healthcare facility that delivers comprehensive, culturally competent, high-quality primary healthcare services to individuals and families. Health centers integrate access to primary healthcare services, such a medical, dental, mental health and pharmacy services, among others, and are located in areas where economic, geographic, or cultural barriers limit access to affordable health care. These centers play a vital role in the healthcare system, particularly in serving individuals and families who may face barriers to accessing quality healthcare.
Some key characteristics and functions of Community Health Centers:
- Whole Person Care: CHCs provide whole-person care by offering a wide range of primary healthcare services, as well as wraparound supportive services such as health education, interpretation, and social support services.
- Affordability: CHCs provide services regardless of a patient’s insurance status or ability to pay. They also offer a sliding-fee scale that may reduce the cost for care for those who qualify.
- Accessibility: CHCs improve access to healthcare services by reducing barriers such as cost, lack of insurance, distance and language. They also deliver care in creative ways, such as mobile and school-based services, to reach people where they already are.
- Patient-Directed: CHCs operate under a patient majority governing board of directors. This means that more than half of board members are patients, directly reflecting the populations served. The board helps shape the policies and decision making of the Health Center to ensure the future of the organization, as well as leaders in the organization, are acting in the best interest of our patients and community.
CHCs are a critical component of the healthcare safety net, serving as primary care providers for millions of Americans who may not have access to healthcare otherwise. Their mission is to improve the health outcomes and quality of life for underserved populations while reducing healthcare disparities in communities.
